  • The mountain gorillas
  • The western lowland gorillas

The western lowland gorillas occur in congo Brazzaville, the central African republic, equatorial guinea, Cameroon and gabon. The zaire and sangha river limits their distribution t o the east. More than 20000 western lowland gorillas are still living there by 1995.

The Mountain Gorillas , the last survivors live in the volcanic regions of the virungas in Zaire, Uganda, Rwanda as well as Bwindi impenetrable forest in Uganda. In total of approximately 800 individuals survive.

The eastern lowland gorillas are only occurring in democratic republic of congo , its is protected in the Kahuzi biega national Park and the maiko national park. It is distributed between lubutu in the north, lubero in the north east and fizi in the south. Of all the subspecies Eastern lowland gorillas is the most impressive. Its face is more elongated and his nose with its compressed nostrils is narrower than in the other sub species. In 1982 it was estimated that there were still 3000-5000 lowland gorillas in eastern democratic republic of Congo.   Survey conducted in the mountainous parts of Kahuzi biega national park in 1979 counted 223 individuals encompassing 14 families and 5 solitary males. Are survey in 1990 has increased the population of the eastern lowland gorillas from 258-284 gorillas in 25 groups plus 9 solitary males.

The mountain gorillas, families contain one or two additional adult males , who are usually related to the silverback. The size of a group varies between 6 and 37 members. A Number of males ( 10 % of the entire population) are solitary  or form small population for members at most. From 15 years on wards, the male are capable of founding a family. The females are mature at the age of 7 1/2years but fertilization is closer to 10 years. Only one young is born at the interval of 4 Years. In the population of eastern lowland female gorillas mature at the age of only 8 years. This means that during her life time of 25 years a female can only give birth only to 3 offspring’s compared to other animals. This is not good reproductive success rate at all. The gorillas belong to those few species of socially living primates where not only the male but also the female emigrate from their natal group and the feeding of Gorillas.

The group centre on an old male, the silver back, who leads and defends his family. He especially protects the two or three youngster’s like to play and generally spend time in the neighborhood of the silverback as their mother no longer concerns themselves with them. The dominate silverback displays a great tolerance towards them.
