Getting there

There are various ways to getting around Kahuzi biega national park located in the southern part of Lake Kivu. These ways include by road, water , air as explained below to enable travellers visit the national park for the most un forgettable Gorilla Safari holiday with either Trusted Congo Safari Agents or through the park.

Getting to Kahuzi Biega National Park by car or Road Transport

Starting the Journey from Kigali International Airport.

Travelers coming Kigali international  airport , must seek an overnight stay in Kigali and start the journey early in the morning driving through nyungwe forest national park located in Rwanda and reach in  Changugu town and enter to bukavu through Rusizi 1 border and enter the democratic republic of congo. The Drive from Kigali to Bukavu town may take around 6 Hours with stop over for lunch and pointing in mind the driving speed limit of Rwanda being maximum of 60km/hr. Travelers are advised to seek accommodation from Bukavu Town as there is not accommodation  near the park except Camping site at the park headquarter.

Starting the Journey from Burundi.

Bujumbura being the capital city of Burundi , the traveler drives for a distance of 182 Kms to cross from Bujumbura, to Democratic republic of congo, you can go via Changugu, traveling through Rwanda on tarmac road(the journey takes about three and a half hours).

From Bujumbura you can also go straight to Bukavu by going up the Nyangesi  escapement;  you should allow four to five hours when using this route for the travel to Congo.From  the escapement there is a spectacular view over the Rusizi valley but the track is steep.

Starting the Journey from Goma in Democratic republic of congo.

Goma being located in the northern part of Lake Kivu and its with in congo, you can go to Bukavu by taking the road along Lake Kivu these 200 km will take about six hours but can be more depending on the state of the road  and the road is very bad ( Not recommended to Travelers).

Getting to Kahuzi Biega National Park by Air

Democratic republic being a wealth country with many riches , it has international airlines that are connecting to congo from developed countries.

From Europe;

By SL Brussels, which departs from Brussels to Kigali and Bujumbura (several  flight each week).

By Air France ,which departs from Paris to Kigali and Bujumbura several flights a week).

By ETHIOPIA AIRLINES via Addis Ababa.

By LUFTHANSA and SWISS AIR to Nairobi and owned by KENYA AIRWAYS.

By AEROFLOT; inquire at your travel agency.

Important Note; Although many international flights stop at kishasha the capital of zaire ,the KBNPis much more easily accessed through  Bujumbura or Kigali.

African domestic flights.

From Kinshasa to Goma by AIR ZAIRE(several flights per week)

From Goma to kavumu (30kms from bukavu) by local airlines such as VAC  TMK  AGETRAF and SWALA (several flights per day.

From Kinshasa to Goma by SCIBE SHABAIR and CITY EXPREESS

From Nairobi to Kigali by Kenya Airways,then from Kigali to Kamembe(the airport of Changugu)by AIR RWANDA. Possibilities most days.

Getting to Bukavu by Boat/ ferry

There are many ferries that make transportation from Goma to Bukavu but the most reliable is the ihusi express.

and they have various stages of transportation from Goma to Bukavu  and select the level of travel and choose the boat to be used depending on the time of travel.

  • Ihusi Boat-US $50—3-4 hours
  • Luxury/ VIP Boat-US $100 per person and this includes accommodation taking 6 hours with different stops for photos. Bedding are also inclusive. So, the total cost =US $2500
  • Speed Boat from Goma to Bukavu—US $1500 carrying 15 paxes and this goes through the Idjwi Island.
  • Two Docking Places i.e the VIP section at Ihusi Express Services and the General public section.

Travelers from Goma to Bukavu should be aware of the docking places since these are far from the city center and major accommodation that require 30 minutes to drive to Bukavu town. From Goma to Bukavu on Lake Kivu (2-3 departures per day). The journey takes 3-4 hours.
